Travel to Cure Diabetes is a joint venture between JDRF and Private Trade Winds, established to fund a cure for type 1 diabetes – one trip at a time. Here we are at the end of January, and if you’re like most people your New Year’s Resolution(s) may be over. In fact, 33% of those making a New Year’s Resolution will have given up by now, and 75% of people will call it quits by the end of June. I’m happy to say that I’m hanging in there, but that has more to do with the way I structured my Resolutions than any willpower of my own. This year, I Resolved to GAIN, and it has made all the difference in the world. We, at Private Trade Winds would like to help you Resolve to GAIN in 2013. Sound interesting? Here’s how it’s done!

Most people proclaim that they will LOSE, STOP or QUIT something in the New Year, and the negativity associated with those words can set a person up for failure. Who wants to be a loser or a quitter, right? To put a positive spin on your New Year’s Resolution, start with a Mini Bucket List. A Mini Bucket List includes immediate items that can be checked off of your Big Bucket List. Mark Twain wrote,

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed

by the things you didn’t do than the ones you did do.”

With that in mind, Resolving to Get Things Done in 2013 has to be all about GAINING!

The following is an example of a Mini Bucket List:

1. Gain A New Stamp on your Passport! Set your sites on exploring a new Destination. I chose London with an additional trip in the Fall to Cancun. I have always wanted to go, and since walking and snorkeling will be in order (respectively), then I better get into shape!
2. GAIN a new experience! I’m thinking zip lining, and I’m looking forward to it with great anticipation and enthusiasm!
3. GAIN a new piece of knowledge, hobby or interest. I have never given much time to the arts, but while in London . . .
4. GAIN a new relationship, or strengthen a current one. This could be with a friend, family member, coworker, or even through a volunteer opportunity.
5. GAIN a greater understanding of the world around you, and start planning a new adventure for next year’s Mini Bucket List. Maybe it’s time for that once-in-a-lifetime trip from your Big Bucket List!

We are starting a series of articles in our monthly newsletter detailing “What Makes Us Different” and, thereby, setting us apart from other club-type concepts. Is branding really all that important? Some would say ‘No’, most would say ‘Yes’, and when asking the affluent luxury traveler – all would say, ‘ABSOLUTELY!’ When you read the words ‘Tiffany‘, ‘Mercedes‘, and ‘Apple‘ you need only to see their logo to identify the product you are buying. My grandson is only two years old, and can identify every Starbucks from his car seat as he’s being driven down the road. I’d like to think it’s because he’s brilliant, but the fact is that he already knows the Starbucks brand.

My first real experience underlining the importance of branding was when my son was born. Trying to save money, I purchased a baby shampoo that was packaged similar to Johnson & Johnson, which promised ‘no tears’ if soap dripped in his eyes. I was feeling quite thrifty with my purchase, until I lathered him up and noticed one of the ingredients listed on the bottle was formaldehyde! I performed a quick rinse, threw the shampoo out and learned a very valuable life lesson – it pays to know what you’re investing in, no matter how large or small the purchase!

In Celebration of our 5th Anniversary, we are continuing to expand our comprehensive travel service and ‘club-type concept’ to bring the best in luxury travel at the best value in the marketplace. “So,” you ask, “What is a Residence Club and what makes it so special?” A Residence Club is usually a small to medium luxury boutique condo resort that has been sold to owners in 4-6 week increments. Condo units are typically 2-3 bedrooms, fully furnished and professionally designed. Owners have privileged hotel-type services like housekeeping, concierge, transportation and local discounts and offers. Each property is unique, but they’re generally very luxurious and quaint, with most of the amenities found in larger resorts – such as fitness center, spa, restaurant, golf, lounge, business center – you name it – so you feel extra special when staying there. These properties are also ideally located within resort communities for easy access to town and sports activities.  A Fractional Resort is typically of lesser quality, construction and design but sold in a similar manner to a Residence Club.  Sometimes, a Residence Club can be referred to as a timeshare, but they actually differ significantly in size, construction, quality and service. They are considered deeded real estate, so an owner can re-sell their weeks through a resort real estate agent, just like a whole ownership property. To make it all more confusing, different countries interchange the use of Fractional, Residence club and Timeshare words – so, no wonder why everyone is often confused!!

WHY is this exciting for PTW renters?  More options than a regular hotel, of course!  Also, many Residence Clubs do not allow market rentals, so we feel quite privileged to have gained access to various weeks of usage for our clients. “Our trip to Villa La Estancia in Cabo was one of the best, if not THE best family vacation we have ever had. We have traveled extensively abroad and within the US, so this is quite a compliment.

Once we had our dates set, you were great at putting together all the paperwork, airport transfer to the resort, etc. We had everything set well ahead of our vacation.

The resort itself was incredible. The villa was absolutely gorgeous! The view from our terrace was of the gorgeous swimming pools, and beyond that, was the Sea of Cortez, and the familiar Lands End rocks at the tip of Baja.

We also purchased the meal plan while we were there. It was expensive, but the food was outstanding. We’ve never been to a place where we never got tired of the food! Our servers were friendly and very attentive to our needs. We had lunch at the swim-up bar every day while we were there, and La Casona had really superb food.

As a matter of fact, all the employees, from reception, to activities to even the pool attendants were friendly and attentive.

We are very interested in returning to Villa La Estancia, after our wonderful week there. None of us wanted to come home!”

I read an interesting article today that I think is worth sharing. It was written by Kellie B. Gormly in Travel Agent Central, and it focused on the increase of American travelers who are vacationing alone. The article referenced a survey by American Express Travel Spending & Saving Tracker, and indicated that 16% of travellers will be hitting the road and/or flying alone this year. A figure up four percent from 2011.

I’m all for traveling alone, and I do it quite a bit for both work and pleasure. I enjoy planning my own itinerary, people watching, and meeting new and interesting people wherever I go. I love family vacations and couples getaways, but it’s nice to escape the craziness of life occasionally – decompress if you will, and come back completely refreshed and ready for the next round of whatever life brings.

Traveling alone is a great option, but remember to keep it safe. Villa travel offers that added measure of security that shouldn’t be overlooked. Don’t just think of a villa as a huge Tuscan estate; remember a villa is ‘any’ classic or modern vacation residence, that has been upgraded to superior status, and provides exceptional service and amenities like those typically found in a 5-Star resort. They range in size from studios and one bedrooms to 18+ bedroom estates. What sets them apart from typical vacation home rentals is the ‘superior’ level of service, accommodations and amenities. Even some of our larger villas can be broken down into single units to accommodate those traveling alone.

Sport Fishing in Cabo

Here’s a shout out to all the wonderful Dads that have managed to find that perfect balance between family, work and play! This is your day so relax and enjoy it. Whether you’re swinging a golf club or swinging in a hammock, we at Private Trade Winds would like to wish you a very Happy Father’s Day!

Just wanted to let you know that even I, who is a strong supporter of travel agents, can try to take things into my own hands and not do so well….

This morning I saw that Southwest was having a sale on Fall air fares and thought I should book my air fare for our upcoming New York trip.  The best Southwest could do was around $600 per person (three of us traveling) and we’d be traveling to two or more cities with long layovers.  I tried Jet Blue and found a great fare outbound $190…but no availability for three on the return.  So I called Our Travel Manager, Janet Anderson . . . . should have done this in the first place!  She booked us on Delta for a round trip fare of $270 each with a one hour layover in Minneapolis, right out of Orange County (don’t’ need to drive to LAX)!

This illustrates to me once again that travel agents are a very valuable resource for travelers and that you don’t always get the best deal booking yourself or booking on the “cheap” airlines!  I don’t think I’ll try booking on my own again!  Oh yes, this fare to NY is lower than what my husband pays for tickets to Phoenix on his business site!

It was a night of hope in an otherwise uncertain and frightening world for children afflicted with Juvenile Diabetes. Private Trade Winds was honored to be present in support of this worthy cause, and contributed another $56,000 in villa product for the live auction event, bringing a four year contribution to more than  $225,000. The prestigious Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, California set the backdrop for an elite gathering of Orange County’s most generous socialites and contributors. The halls were lined with vendors representing exquisite jewels, coveted art, and fine wine & spirits available to the highest bidder, but it was the live auction in the grand ballroom that rallied the crowd into generous giving. Irene Aviles, Founder & President of Private Trade Winds, as well as Andra Minnehan and Judy Sweetland Directors of Sales & Marketing were present at the event. “This is such a worthy cause, and seeing the children afflicted with this disease really makes you count your blessings, and give generously to put an end to this type of suffering,” said Aviles.

Villas donated by Private Trade Winds include a ski-in/ski-out Aspen chalet, a beachfront condo on Oahu, and PTW’s newest gem – an 8 bedroom luxury seaside villa on the French Atlantic Coast near Bordeaux in France. A Private Trade Winds membership package valued at $2,995 was included with each winning villa bid, allowing recipients to enjoy properties in the company’s portfolio at up to 50% off for one year. Memberships were also available to purchase at $2995 with PTW donating 50% of the fee back to JDRF. The evening concluded with the annual after party known as Club Imagine where music and dance filled the air.

The opening session of the 2012 Ragatz Conference kicked off this morning in Scottsdale, Arizona and PTW President Irene Aviles and Director of Sales Andra Minnehan are there to glean pertinent information and network with attendees. This was inspired by our thankfulness to have survived another challenging economic year, and to give to those who could never dream of a villa vacation of their own. We wanted to inspire our clients to think about how they might be able to give back through their travels, as well.

Before the recession hit in 2008, you might recall a significant movement available to travelers that would enable them to incorporate some form of volunteering within the scope of their vacation. Numerous articles were written in 2007, from ABC News and the New York Times, to various on-line news outlets about countless companies created to provide various opportunities for travelers to consider when vacationing to almost any destination. Sadly, once the recession hit, the excitement decreased as the world began focusing on smaller trips closer to home.

Today, five years later, interest is resurging and many options exist from extremely affordable to luxury off shoots.
For example, International Volunteer HQ  offers the world’s most affordable international volunteer organizations with program fees starting at $180 per person. For the luxury traveler, companies like Hands Up Holidays  or Project Migration can offer uniquely rewarding experiences without sacrificing the basic tolerances we have become accustomed to. Project Migration has an advisory board which includes Richard Branson, and has supporters such as Sting and other celebrities.

With so much poverty and lack of basic necessities in food, water, housing and medical care, you can find a charity organization to support in just about any country. Most of the Voluntourism groups go to Africa, South America, Mexico and Asia. If you don’t want to immerse yourself in a vacation project, you can choose philanthropic travel expeditions and excursions through companies like National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions in Alaska, Baja, Central America or the Galapagos. These companies work with conservation organizations and councils to use traveler’s funds for research, and offer the luxury traveler an interesting perspective to the mysteries of the planet.

So what should you ask yourself about Voluntourism? Consider the following:

• Define and identify your purpose in this type of travel.
• Set reasonable goals and objectives – not expectations.
• Select a destination you are comfortable with.
• Do you want to accomplish a goal, or engage in a greater cause?
• Determine physical and emotional intensity – how much are you able or willing to handle? Weather conditions should be considered, as well.
• Your itinerary should consist of a mix of service, connection with the destination, culture, art, geography, recreation time, and personal downtime.
• Type and style of accommodation.
• Will you be traveling with or without family? Various options exist for all ages.
• How much time can I dedicate to the volunteer portion of the trip? This should be considered with all the travel time needed.
• Be prepared for the unexpected – you will be engaging in a different life!

Hopefully, the idea of Voluntourism has sparked some interesting thoughts on where you might like to travel this year! A very unique magazine has launched called AFAR, and it covers regions of the world differently than most. It is written for those that want to immerse themselves in the culture of the destination, as well as its natives, foods, traditions, religions, etc. It’s very interesting – I just placed my order!

Irene Aviles, Founder and President of Private Trade Winds, has traveled the world with her children since they were born. Read her article to learn more about all the enriching benefits and cultural experiences they have received as a result.

Guess where I was this Thanksgiving…… Traveling with children in Mexico! It’s totally SAFE! Don’t listen to the news just pack your normal common sense. It’s a shame to keep Mexico off the list, it’s just so awesome! Great food, sun and fun! I couldn’t ask for a better blessing than being able to spend time with my children. It’s undoubtedly my favorite pastime.

One question I’m always asked is “How do you manage to take your children all around the world?” Well, for starters they began traveling with us when they were very young. Our first trip with our daughter was at age 4 months. Somehow, as new parents, we thought we were actually going to go skiing – NOT! Poor child, what were we thinking taking a colicky baby to high altitude? Since PTW was not around for us to get glean good advice we tried different things along the way, learning from each experience as we went.

One thing we discovered right from the start was the enormous advantage of renting a villa. Having our own kitchen and living room while traveling saved us a lot of heartache at every age. When my son was born, we decided to wait until he was eleven months old to travel with him for the first time, and we went to Hawaii where he learned to walk! Boy oh boy – were we busy on that trip! Again, looking back and with some advice, we should have gone a few months earlier and enjoyed the playpen stage. Nevertheless, starting early was one of the key factors in raising our kids to be great travelers. Fast Forward to today where they are 11 and 13, and we can’t leave them behind. They want to go everywhere with us!

So how does traveling help your kids? Or, you for that matter? Traveling is an education unlike anything you can learn from a book. Don’t get me wrong, academics are crucial, but experiencing the world and the life upon it with all five senses is really indescribable in words. When you travel to different states and different countries you see, hear, smell, taste and touch all the similarities in people, and at the same time embrace all the vast differences, as well. I think you appreciate the glory of humanity and feel compassion for it, as well. You can experience different cultures and their own customs which helps one to better understand why there are so many conflicts in the world. And to think we are just one speck in the universe – it’s quite overwhelming! It undoubtedly touches the soul.

This intellectual and spiritual knowledge may not be as readily absorbable for children as it is for adults, but the experience is still palpable and memorable. They meet children of different races, who wear different clothes, and perhaps live in poverty they can’t quite understand, but the bottom line is that they begin to discover a respect for humility. Children love other children and find them fascinating. As they get older, they can actually verbalize their gratefulness and appreciation for the blessings they have. They begin to better understand who they are and who they want to be!

I remember several awkward moments that our children really learned from, even at the earliest ages. Aboard the Disney Cruise at ages 3 and 5, we put our children in the kids club for a few hours, as we were so excited to see the huge facilities with all the magic of Disney entertainment. They had different rooms for different ages – unbelievable themes and activities, plus hundreds of kids running everywhere. I got a quick dose of vertigo and had some concerns about adult supervision, but I was assured all would be fine, so we left. Upon our return, we found that our five year old had migrated into the three year old room, because she preferred the younger kids and smaller environment, and was just less overwhelmed and scared! Our five year old quickly learned and expressed a preference for a much smaller kids club, where there was more one-on-one time with the counselors and more structured activities. To this day at age 13 our daughter prefers smaller, more intimate groups, versus our son who can adapt easier in either environment. Who would have thought we would have learned that on the Disney Cruise?
I could tell of numerous cultural experiences in Hawaii, China, Philippines, Europe, Mexico and South America. One of the most memorable was when our children, in their fine department store bathing suits, stood stone-like as they were getting ready to go into the ocean in the Philippines, only to realize the other kids were swimming naked or in their clothes! They were shocked and knew “that was not what we do” at ages four and six years old! This is a memory they still share with others today. They also remember things like climbing trees and playing with the little Philipino kids that didn’t speak English, falling in quick sand, playing soccer with neighborhood kids in Croatia, visiting Santa in Chile (they were surprised he looked the same but then realized he was after all, universal). They have tasted wine in a winery in Chile, gazed at white-faced monkeys and Toucans in Costa Rica (just like in the picture books), visited all the Disney theme parks around the world, sang and played the piano for a group of adults aboard The World ship, and their latest remembrance, doing the polar plunge in Antarctica (yes – the water was 27 degrees!). They have seen so much abroad and in the USA including poverty around the world in every country that is unparalleled in the USA. They even witnessed pick-pocketing in Spain – it shocked them but taught them to guard their belongings! As they get older they appreciate more and more of what they have – especially food.

If you have picky food eaters, this will probably be the most difficult aspect of travel – along with public transportation and excessive walking. Food in foreign countries can be challenging, so of course, having a condo or home to come back to for a bowl of cereal is more enjoyable than you can imagine. We are fortunate that our children have always been willing to try new things, and of course, we push a bit! Today, they have a real international palette and eat sushi, Japanese curry, squid, Indian and Persian food, buffalo burgers and other foods not common to many kids.

Best of all, traveling with kids at any age gives you a wonderful opportunity to bond with your children in a relaxed and fun environment. So what if you didn’t start early? It’s never too late! Kids at any age can learn to love the beauty of travel. Start in the USA or the Caribbean, you don’t have to go far to get some of the same experiences. In the USA, travel to the opposite coast from where you live. The East Coast and the West Coast are vastly different. Arizona and New Mexico are like different countries! The South is a real eye opener for city folk, and the nature of Wyoming and Montana are breathtaking. Hawaii offers a lot of culture if you explore outside the resort you are staying in. While the pool and beach are great, finding the local spots and being adventurous (like going night swimming with the Mantas) can leave you and your kids with countless memories. The Caribbean, again – lots of culture inspired by the French and the British. I can tell you countless stories including eating with the locals on Grand Cayman at a pig roast – amazing food!

Day of 1 of the Luxury Travel Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada is off to a great start. The excitement is palpable and the buzz has already started to generate. They conveyed to me an interesting point – that families traveling with small children will sometimes opt to stay home and not travel at all rather than split the family up in two or more separate hotel rooms. The concept of villa travel gathers the whole family together under one roof, but affords comfort and privacy with multiple bedrooms.

The concept of a complete or gourmet kitchen was a big draw, again keeping the family together and allowing the family to enjoy meals on their own time schedule, rather than rushing downstairs for breakfast by 9am.

The Travel Institute is here at The Luxury Travel Expo and they are sharing information about their Communiversity Program. I just read an article titled, “What Airline Do Your Clients Hate The Most?” by George Dooley. It was well-written, interesting and informative, and referenced a report from Amplicate.com, an online consumer research firm that tracks public opinion. The report found that 57% of comments regarding U.S. airlines from social media users over the last 12 months were negative, citing poor customer service, cancelled flights and difficult booking procedures as their frustration.

That sounds about right to me. As a frequent traveler myself I’ve experienced many unsettling situations. While the report from Amplicate.com is a bit dismal, I would like to throw out a lifeline, and make the road most traveled a lot less bumpy. But, I’ll get to that shortly.

Haven’t we all felt this way sometimes?

Does anyone out there remember when air travel fun? Come on Baby Boomers, I’m talking to you. People would get all dressed up and it was très chic to fly. Customer Service was an action not a Department, and we couldn’t wait to take off and ‘Fly the Friendly Skies.’ ABC has just released a show in their Fall lineup called Pan Am, it’s a period drama set in the ‘60s about the pilots and stewardesses (aka flight attendants for Gen X’ers), who once made Pan Am the most glamorous way to fly. Without giving my exact age, I’m happy to say I remember those days.

So, what happened? Somewhere along the way the friendly skies turned dark and flying became dreaded rather than desired. There are many factors to blame, but I want to focus on one in particular. Could this lack of service, in an otherwise service-oriented industry, have something to do with book-it-yourself online systems, and the absence of human interaction when planning our travel?

I realize we’ve come a long way since the ‘60s, and the white-gloved glamour is no longer necessary. Flying is just another mode of transportation, like jumping into a cab in New York City. But maybe we’ve gotten a little too relaxed about jet-setting around the world with only the powers of cyberspace to save us.

Maybe the television networks should consider a series about Travel Agents. They wouldn’t have to reach back into the historical archives of the Smithsonian to find information they could just pick up a telephone. Modern Travel Agencies have been around since the second half of the 19^thcentury and have weathered depressions, recessions and the internet boom – and they’re still here.  Can a Travel Agent prevent a flight from being cancelled? No. But we’re definitely who you would want on speed dial when something happens. Travel Agents streamline the process by taking on the arduous task of dealing with airlines and sitting on hold for hours on end so you don’t have to. Booking travel is a great responsibility, and for the best outcome, should always be left to the professionals.

Keep your tray tables down and your seats reclined in the wake of AMR Corporation’s announcement that the parent company of American Airlines and American Eagle has filed voluntary petitions for Chapter 11 reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. After all, it is just that – reorganization.

The news came today and travelers are already up in arms with concern about planned and purchased travel, as well as frequent flyer frenzy. In an effort to reassure all concerned, I thought it would be best to post a link to American Airline’s information page where most questions can be answered.

Suffice it to say, American Airlines is flying normal schedules and conducting business worldwide, and they continue to honor tickets and reservations, and make changes and refunds as well. AMR has $4.1 billion in cash to ensure an uninterrupted supply of goods and services during the proceedings.

Thomas W. Horton, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of AMR and American Airlines said, “Our Board decided that it was necessary to take this step now to restore the Company’s profitability, operating flexibility, and financial strength. We are committed to working as quickly and efficiently as possible to appropriately restructure American so that it can emerge from Chapter 11 well-positioned to assure the Company’s long term viability and its ability to compete effectively in the marketplace.” Horton concluded by saying, “American Airlines has a strong, proud history and we will have a successful future. Working through this difficult, but necessary action and process, I am confident we will succeed in enhancing our reputation as a global leader known for excellence and innovation, a travel partner customers seek out, and a carrier that serves communities throughout the world.”

So let’s slow down and take a deep breath as we continue to fly the friendly skies!

Adding The Personal Touch

Travel Agents have weathered the perfect storm of catastrophic events over the last few years – an economy that hit rock bottom collided with a wave of “book-it-yourself” internet sites, and I’m happy to say they have not only managed to survive through the wreckage, but rather to thrive.

I just returned from a training seminar in Scottsdale, Arizona where I had the privilege of speaking in depth with Travel Agents from all over the U.S. and Canada, and I have to tip my hat to them. What a great bunch of people to be surrounded by. Travel Agents illuminate customer service, and it’s evident even in short conversations. They’re friendly, helpful and willing to go the extra mile. I’m the person that walks out of a store in the mall and can’t remember which way I just came from. I asked one of the Travel Agent attendees if he knew where the Starbucks was located inside the resort, and he not only told me how to get there, but walked me in and had a cup of coffee with me. That’s a Travel Agent.

While it is true that sites like Travelocity and Orbitz have cut into the business share of Agents, a steadfast client base has been maintained in a $16.2 billion dollar industry. Why, you ask? Because people want people. Travel Agents are service-oriented by nature, and they have that gene that makes you feel cared for and protected. They not only want to book a great trip for you, but they want to ensure a great experience. They care about your security and somehow manage to stay current on the ever changing policies at the airports. Try to get that from a computer booking!

So, I’d just like to take this opportunity to say, “thank you” to all the Travel
Agents that weathered the storm and came out the other side with a smile on
their face. I’d also like to thank our own Travel Agents for representing Private Trade Winds with the best in service, integrity and care. You make me proud to work for this Company.

And while I’m at it, I’d also like to thank “Ed” for a great cup of coffee.

Looking out at the golf course was very nice. The condo sits on the 7th hole of the Jack Nicklaus Golf Course, and Wyatt thought he might like to try playing golf some day. But for now, playing in the pool would be much more fun. Especially since Private Trade Winds made sure there were plenty of pool toys for him to play with! Can you believe that!!

This was a fun trip for Wyatt – and a fun trip for Wyatt means a great trip for Wyatt’s mommy. We don’t want to leave her out, so here’s what Wyatt’s mommy had to say:

“The condo was beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and right next to the pool. We loved walking into the condo with music playing and the blinds drawn to the great view of the golf course! Traveling with a toddler, I appreciated the baby gate and other baby gear that was on hand. We even found pool toys in the garage which made pool time with my son so much nicer. Once again, Private Trade Winds created a wonderful mini vacation for me and my family.”
